I had two memorable bike rides today!
Morning commute - 11 miles: I headed out in the dark, as usual. I used my 3 bright lights, but also had a Harvest Full moon casting shadows and lit my way! The winter constellation "Orion" was high overhead. The effect was breath taking. I dressed for this cold November morning and covered all my exposed skin. I pulled my interior cap down to my goggles, to keep the biting cold air off my forehead. My thermal booties, 2 pair of bicycling gloves and goggles added new layers; I was warm. My beard frosted up. And my water bottle froze in the 23 degree ride!
Evening commute home: 34 degrees:
The weather forecasters predicted rain in "late afternoon". Yep it rained. Pretty hard! I declined 2 offers for a ride home; I wanted to try out my 2-piece rain suit. The yellow rain suit kept me warm and mostly dry. It was windy, and occasional ice pellets stung my nose. Again, the thermal booties were perfect, as it rained all the way home.
I feel for my neighboring farmers. After a beautiful September, the wet October rains has made their harvests nearly impossible. I dried off quickly, but it will take several DAYS for the farmers' fields to dry for harvesting.

Hiya Pat! I admire your bravery and conditioning to be biking this late in the season! Isn't the newest bike technology wonderful? Thermal booties and rain suits. Next you'll be putting on your studded snow tires for those really tough rides through the snow.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you and Jean!
Wayne
PS: According to the Farmer's Almanac, the first November full moon is called "Full Beaver Moon". The 2nd one is called a Blue Moon, of course!
Hi Wayne,
ReplyDeleteYes, the clothing makes a big difference.
Last week I attended a 2-day class in Madison, WI and I stayed with John. A training company there is a preferred vendor in SAS programming classes, AND it's only 3 miles from John's place!!!
It was my first return trip to Madison since my May'2009 bike trip. I obviously drove this time, but the I-90 freeway parallelled the biking trip, so it reminded me a lot. :)
I thought of you, Johanna & family in Waukesa, but this 3-day trip flew by!
Have a great Thanksgiving! Pat
