"Ode to Joy" (Beethoven) rewritten as "A Joyful Harvest" by Garrison Keillor

Our church celebrated a Harvest Mass on the eve before Thanksgiving. Nov 25, 2009. I love the garden lyrics in verses 3, 4, 5 by Garrison Keillor. Jean and I grew all plants mentioned except the parsley and garlic.

Wishing you a happy Thanksgiving! Pat

"A Joyful Harvest"

Tune: “Ode to Joy” by Beethoven
Verses 3-5 lyrics by Garrison Keillor

Verse 1:
Joyful, joyful we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flow'rs before thee, opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.'

Verse 2:
All thy words with joy surround thee, earth and heav'n reflect thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise;
field and forest, vale and mountain, flowr'y meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us the rejoice in thee.

Verse 3:
Garlic, beet greens, and cucumber, carrots, cabbage, peppers, peas,
Beans and brocc'li without number, purple eggplant majesties,
In the garden of thy mercy, Grant us, Lord, the sun and rain
for potatoes, onions, parsley, For the goodness of the grain.

Verse 4:
Grant us, Lord, a row of lettuce. Grant us spinach by the bunch.
May the worms not come and get us, May the bugs not eat our lunch.
Grant us, Lord, a crop of sweet corn, evr'y row of kernels bless,
Shining like a golden beacon, Of thy love and tenderness.

Verse 5:
Thou hast given strength for hoeing, Thou hast given earth so pure,
Streams of water ever flowing, Thou hast given great manure.
Gard'ners singing, march we onward, Growing in the midst of strife;
Vegetables are rising sun-ward, In tri-um-phant praise of live.
