Pruning our Orchard

We prune our orchard in the winter, when the trees and pests are dormant.   The last weekend in January proved to be a great time to start!   It was 10 degrees, so I bundled up with lots of layers of clothing.   Jean joined in, and we pruned 6 trees the first day.

Here are some tools:   2  pruners, loppers, bow saw, ladders, and baskets.  My favorite new tool is that orange pole/extension loppers!   It lets me stretch up the highest branches... pull the rope, and it nips off branches.   Those apples up there are too high to reach anyway!

We scheduled a vacation visiting John in mid-February, so it was rewarding to have a great head start.   Finished the last tree on Feb 15.

It's fun to think of the 2011 apples, pears, plums and cherries coming!

BEFORE - Patten Pear

AFTER - Patten Pear.  (Now, sun light can reach all the fruit)
