I took a Wednesday vacation day today. Our gardens were freshly tilled. So, it was ideal for planting our first 1/2 of the sweet corn patch. Now that it's May 6th, our ground is warm enough to plant corn. Jean & I planted two varieties of sweet corn. 1) Jubilee 2) Silver Queen. We will wait 2 weeks for the last 1/2. This way, the staggered plantings and 2 varieties will spread the meals out for a August and early September harvest.
I learned a lot about growing sweet corn while growing up on The Farm in New Market, Minnesota. Dad planted about 5 acres with his 8-row corn planter. On the July/August mornings, our family picked the ripe sweet corn by hand. As one of the oldest siblings then, I'd sell a pickup load daily at our Apple Valley location. We learned sales go well when you have a quality product, and when you include extra value in a "baker's dozen" (13 ears).
We finished today by taking our dog Sequoia to her annual Vet visit and shots. Sequoia LOVES to ride in the van. And she likes seeing all the dogs in the Vet's office. Here's a photo of us at a park last summer.
:-) What's blooming on May 6, 2009? Bleeding Hearts (aka: "Heart Flowers")
